Wilbraham is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, located as a suburb of Springfield and part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. With a population of 14,613 at the 2020 census, the town has deep historical roots stretching back centuries. The area first attracted attention in 1636 when William Pynchon, founder of Springfield, purchased land from the Nipmuc people. Wilbraham was officially settled in 1730 by Nathaniel Hitchcock, who built a log hut along what is now Main Street. The Native Americans, primarily the Nipmuc, called this region "Minnechaug," meaning Berryland, and used it for hunting and fishing along the Chicopee River rather than establishing permanent villages. After many petitions to the Massachusetts General Court, Wilbraham was incorporated as an independent town in 1763 with a population of about four hundred. The First Congregational Church, organized in 1741, became the town's first church and later merged into the Wilbraham United Church. The name Wilbraham derives from villages near Cambridge, England, with roots tracing back to "Wilburgham," meaning Wilburga's homestead. Today, the town comprises several neighborhoods including Wilbraham Center, North Wilbraham, and East Wilbraham, and is home to the Wilbraham & Monson Academy. The historic Boston & Albany Railroad Line, which passes through North Wilbraham, remains in use today.
