West Seneca is a town located in Erie County, New York, serving as a suburb of Buffalo and part of the inner "Southtowns," a cluster of middle-class suburban communities that also includes Orchard Park and Hamburg. According to the 2020 census, the town had a population of 45,500 residents.
The town's history began when it was formed in 1851 from portions of Cheektowaga and Hamburg. Originally named simply Seneca, the town adopted the "West" prefix in 1852 to distinguish itself from another Seneca in Ontario County. European settlement had been delayed until the mid-nineteenth century because the land was part of the former Buffalo Creek Reservation. In 1909, the area immediately south of Buffalo separated from West Seneca to become the city of Lackawanna. Two historic sites in West Seneca are recognized on the National Register of Historic Places: the Eaton Site, listed in 1979, and the Community of True Inspiration Residence, listed in 2013.
Geographically, West Seneca spans 21.41 square miles, with Cazenovia Creek and the Buffalo River running through it. The town is well connected by major transportation routes, including Interstate 90 and several state routes. The community includes several hamlets and locations, such as Ebenezer, which was named after a group of German Lutherans called the Community of True Inspiration who settled the area around 1843 before eventually relocating to Iowa.
