Wellston is a town located in Lincoln County, Oklahoma. The community was founded by Christian T. Wells, who established a trading post at the site in 1883. The post office officially opened on September 19, 1884, marking the town's formal establishment. The trading post temporarily closed during the allotment of the Kickapoo Reserve, but following the Run of 95, the post office reopened on June 15, 1897, allowing the community to continue its development.
Today, Wellston covers a total area of 1.4 square miles and is entirely rural. According to the 2020 census, the town had a population of 679 residents. The community is home to 283 households, with 42.4 percent being married-couple households. The median age of residents is 37.8 years, with roughly 22 percent under age 18 and 16 percent age 65 and older. The town has 333 housing units, with a 15 percent vacancy rate overall.
Wellston's history includes notable contributions to education through Francis Tuttle, an American educator born in the town in 1920 who would go on to leave his mark on the state's educational landscape until his death in 1997.
