Weldon is a town in Halifax County in northeastern North Carolina, located on the Roanoke River with a 2020 population of 1,444. The town's origins trace to 1752, when Daniel Weldon purchased 1,273 acres along the river at Weldon's Landing, positioned just below the fall line and marking the westernmost point of navigation on the Roanoke. The construction of the Roanoke Canal in 1823 to bypass the rapids brought significant economic growth to the area, though the canal is now dry and serves as a public hiking trail. Weldon's greatest legacy emerged in the railroad era, when it became the first railroad hub in the American South. The Seaboard and Roanoke Railroad terminated there, followed by the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad in 1841, which at the time was the longest railroad in the world. This prominence led to the town's incorporation in 1843. The Petersburg and Roanoke Railroad and the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad subsequently extended to Weldon as well. Today, the town celebrates its rich history through landmarks including Grace Episcopal Church and the Weldon Historic District, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
