Wauneta is a village located in Chase County, Nebraska, situated along U.S. Route 6 southeast of Imperial, the county seat. With a population of 549 according to the 2020 census, Wauneta sits at an elevation of 2,942 feet. The village's history began in 1875 when George Rowley and his wife, the first white settlers, built a sod house at the Wauneta Falls. A post office was established in 1877 and has continuously served the community since 1886. The Wauneta Breeze newspaper became an important part of community life, with its first edition printed on January 17, 1887, by John Hann, a young New Yorker. This publication served the area for more than 130 years before printing its final issue on November 12, 2020, when it merged with The Imperial Republican. Railroad service came to Wauneta in 1892, brought by a division of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad that connected to the main line near Culbertson and terminated in Imperial. The village encompasses 0.97 square miles and is home to two sites of historical significance: the Wauneta Roller Mills, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, and the Lovett Site, listed in 1972 and located northwest of the village.
