Vineyard Haven is a census-designated community within the town of Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard in Dukes County. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 2,747 residents. The area has deep historical roots, originally called "Nobnocket" by the Wampanoag people and later named "Homes Hole" by colonial settlers, a phrase derived from a Wampanoag term for "old man" combined with "hole," meaning a sheltered inlet. By the nineteenth century, the spelling changed to "Holmes Hole," honoring John Holmes, who settled in the village during the second half of the eighteenth century. The community officially adopted the name Vineyard Haven in 1871. Though the name technically refers to only one section of Tisbury, the two names are used interchangeably today.
