Vale, Oregon, sits in northeastern Malheur County as the county seat, located approximately twelve miles west of the Idaho border at the intersection of U.S. Routes 20 and 26. The city rests on the Malheur River where it meets Bully Creek, in a landscape shaped by semi-arid climate and high-altitude terrain at an elevation of 2,244 feet.
The area where Vale now stands was historically home to small groups of Native Americans, with Paiutes gathering there seasonally during salmon runs. European settlement began with the Oregon Trail, and journals from 1853 document a trading post in the area. By 1864, Jonathan Keeney had constructed a cabin and barn to lodge passing travelers, later replaced by the Rinehart House in 1872, which still stands today. The railroad arrived in 1883, transforming Vale into an important shipping gateway. The community was officially incorporated as the Town of Vale in 1889 and later became the City of Vale in 1905. In 1887, Vale was named the first county seat of Malheur County with a courthouse constructed to serve that function.
As of the 2020 census, Vale had a population of 1,894 residents. The city experiences cool summers despite frequent hot days, with winter temperatures regularly dropping well below freezing, though snow remains relatively rare. Today, Vale is part of the Ontario, Oregon-Idaho Micropolitan Statistical Area and continues its role as a regional center in southeastern Oregon.
