Tofte is an unincorporated community nestled on the North Shore of Lake Superior in Cook County, Minnesota, within the Superior National Forest. Located twenty-seven miles southwest of Grand Marais and fifty-six miles northeast of Two Harbors, Tofte serves as a gateway to numerous outdoor attractions, including Temperance River State Park, the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, the Superior Hiking Trail, and Carlton Peak Lookout. The community is accessible via Minnesota Highway 61 and Cook County Road 2, also known as the Sawbill Trail.
The town was founded in 1893 by Norwegian twin brothers Andrew and John Tofte, their sister Torget, and her husband Hans Engelsen. The settlement takes its name from the Norwegian birthplace of its founders. Though originally called Carlton after the nearby Carlton Peak, the name had to be changed due to an existing town by that name in Minnesota. A post office has operated in Tofte since 1897. The community faced significant hardship when a forest fire destroyed much of the town in 1910, but residents rebuilt and persevered.
Today, Tofte is home to the North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum, which opened in 1996 as Minnesota's first museum dedicated to commercial fishing. The museum preserves the heritage of Scandinavian immigrants and their communities along Lake Superior's North Shore, documenting their vital contributions to the national commercial fishing industry between the 1880s and 1940s.
