Thaxton is an unincorporated community in western Bedford County, Virginia, situated along U.S. Route 460 between Bedford and Montvale and part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community holds significant historical importance, particularly due to a devastating train accident that occurred on July 2, 1889, when a passenger train derailed over a section of track that had been washed away by unusually heavy rains. This accident killed at least 18 people and injured 21, making it one of the deadliest railroad accidents in Virginia's history. Three of the victims were prominent citizens from Cleveland, Tennessee who were traveling to attend the 1889 World's Fair in Paris; a memorial was erected in their honor later that year. A historical marker was placed near the accident site in 2015 to commemorate this tragedy. Thomas Methodist Episcopal Chapel, an important local landmark, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Today, Thaxton maintains its own post office through the United States Postal Service, and the community is served by Bedford County Public Schools. The Norfolk Southern Blue Ridge District rail line runs through Thaxton, connecting it to the broader transportation network of central Virginia.
