Swan Quarter is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Hyde County, North Carolina, serving as the county seat. Located in western Hyde County on Swanquarter Bay, an inlet of Pamlico Sound, the community sits just 3 feet above sea level. U.S. Route 264 passes along its northern edge, connecting Swan Quarter to Manteo 69 miles to the east and Washington 51 miles to the west. As of the 2020 census, Swan Quarter had a population of 275 residents.
The settlement's roots trace to the 18th century, when Samuel Swann established himself along Pamlico Sound near the head of Swan Bay. Originally called Swann's Quarter, the name was eventually shortened to Swan Quarter and the community became the county seat in 1836. Two historic structures, the Hyde County Courthouse and Lake Mattamuskeet Pump Station, also known as Mattamuskeet Lodge, are recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.
