The community has a unique history tied to the construction of the John Redmond Reservoir in the early 1960s. When the reservoir was built, the original town of Strawn was claimed by the Army Corps of Engineers for use as flood area, prompting the relocation that created New Strawn. The old town site remains accessible for exploration when water levels are low, though little remains today. Visitors can still travel Main Street when conditions allow, and a small parking area marks the approximate location of the former two-room school and Methodist Church that once served the community. The school had housed first through fourth grades in one room and fifth through eighth grades in the second. Today, New Strawn covers 0.82 square miles and experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. The city is served by the Burlington USD 244 public school district. The median household income for the 2016-2020 period was $90,547, and approximately 5.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
