Stites is a small city located in Idaho County in the lower canyon of the South Fork of the Clearwater River, situated about four miles upstream and south of Kooskia on State Highway 13. The community was named for Jacob Stites of New Jersey, who homesteaded the land in 1897. After selling the property two years later, Stites exercised his option to name the city after himself. The town became the eastern terminus of the Northern Pacific branch line up the Clearwater in 1900, which later became the Camas Prairie Railroad's first subdivision line, running eastward from Lewiston to Kooskia before turning south up the lower South Fork. This historic railroad spur was eventually abandoned and removed during the 1980s. Stites officially incorporated in early 1905. An interesting piece of local history involves a highway bridge originally built in 1911 to cross the Salmon River just north of Riggins. This bridge was replaced in 1936 and relocated fifty miles north to Stites. In recent decades, the city's population has declined, falling from 221 residents in 2010 to 171 at the 2020 census. Today, Stites covers a total area of just 0.10 square miles, making it a compact rural community nestled in the scenic Clearwater River valley.
