Steinauer, locally pronounced "Steener," is a small village in Pawnee County, Nebraska with a population of 59 as of the 2020 census. The community's roots trace back to 1856, when Joseph A. Steinauer and his two brothers, Anton and Nicholas, established the first settlement at this location. The three brothers had emigrated from Switzerland in 1852, fleeing famine and depression in their homeland. Heeding warnings about the turmoil in Kansas, they chose instead to settle in what would become Pawnee County. The Steinauer post office was formally established in 1874, officially cementing the settlement's identity. The village itself was platted in 1887 when the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad was extended to the area. The community was named in honor of Joseph A. Steinauer, who served as its first postmaster. Today, Steinauer encompasses just 0.14 square miles and remains a quiet rural village. The area is served by the Humboldt Table Rock Steinauer Public Schools district, connecting the community to educational resources across the broader region.
