Stanhope is a borough situated in the southernmost portion of Sussex County, New Jersey. The community was officially formed on March 24, 1904, through an act of the New Jersey Legislature, carved out from portions of Byram Township. Today, Stanhope covers a total area of 2.09 square miles and is home to the unincorporated community of Lake Musconetcong. The borough shares borders with several neighboring municipalities, including Byram Township and Hopatcong within Sussex County, and Mount Olive Township, Netcong, and Roxbury in Morris County.
According to the 2020 United States census, Stanhope had a population of 3,526 residents, reflecting a modest decline of 84 people from the 2010 census count of 3,610. The median age of residents was 42.8 years, with 18.0 percent under age eighteen and 15.7 percent age sixty-five or older. The borough's households numbered 1,432, with half being married-couple households. Housing was plentiful, with 1,507 units and a relatively low vacancy rate of 5.0 percent. Stanhope operates under the borough form of government, which is the most common municipal structure throughout New Jersey, with the mayor and borough council serving as the governing body and all positions elected at-large on a partisan basis as part of the November general election.
