Spring City is a town in Rhea County, Tennessee, situated along Watts Bar Lake with a 2020 population of 1,949 residents. The town's origins trace back to the 1870s when it began as a stop on the Cincinnati Southern Railroad. Originally called Sulphur Springs for the mineral content in its water, the settlement later became known as Rheaville before merging with nearby Rhea Springs. Following an explosion that caused significant flooding and fire, the town relocated to its present location and was renamed Spring City in honor of the original settlement. The relocated original site now rests beneath Watts Bar Lake. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Spring City flourished as a railroad shipping hub. Its first wooden depot, built in 1879, burned in 1892 and was replaced by a larger structure. The Southern Railway completed the current depot in 1909. The town experienced renewed economic growth in 1942 when the Tennessee Valley Authority completed Watts Bar Dam and reservoir southeast of town, and the Watts Bar Fossil Plant, TVA's first coal-fired plant. The Watts Bar Nuclear Plant, begun in 1973, added further development to the area. Watts Bar Unit 1 began operating in 1996, while Unit 2 entered commercial operation in October 2016 after construction resumed in 2007. Spring City remains connected to its railroad heritage, with both historical significance and modern infrastructure defining the community.
