Spencer is a small city in McCook County, South Dakota, with a population of 136 as of the 2020 census. The city's origins trace back to 1887, when it was laid out as the railroad extended to that point. It was named for H. Spencer, a railroad official, and established a post office that same year. Spencer was officially incorporated in 1917, solidifying its place as a permanent community on the South Dakota plains.
The city's modern history was dramatically shaped by a catastrophic natural disaster. On May 30, 1998, an F4 tornado struck Spencer, becoming the second deadliest tornado in South Dakota history and killing six people. The violent storm nearly destroyed the city, devastating homes and businesses. Mobile Doppler weather radar data recorded winds reaching 264 mph in the tornado as it crossed into McCook County from Hanson County. The disaster had a profound and lasting impact on the community, with the population declining sharply from 315 before the tornado to 145 by April 1999. The city never fully recovered its pre-tornado population and has since hovered around that lower mark. Today, Spencer remains a small rural community with a median age of 48 years, reflecting a population that includes many long-time residents who witnessed and endured the tornado's destruction.
