Solomons, an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Calvert County, sits at the southern tip of the county where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay. Originally called Bourne's Island in 1680 and later Somervell's Island in 1740, it took its current name from 19th century Baltimore businessman Isaac Solomon, who established a cannery there shortly after the Civil War. The area has been inhabited since colonial times and developed a strong maritime tradition, with 19th century shipyards building schooners, sloops, and bugeyes. During the War of 1812, Commodore Joshua Barney's flotilla sailed from Solomons to attack British vessels on Chesapeake Bay.
World War II transformed the community when the Allied command selected it as the site for Naval Amphibious Training Base Solomons. Over 60,000 troops trained there between 1942 and 1945, with the population surging from 263 to more than 2,600. The training lessons proved invaluable at D-Day, Tarawa, Guadalcanal, and other operations. The 1977 completion of the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge connected the previously isolated town to St. Mary's County, opening it to tourism and development.
