Snelling is an unincorporated community in northeastern Merced County, California, situated on the north bank of the Merced River about seventeen miles north of Merced. The settlement originated when the Snelling family established a way station there in 1851, and the community that grew around it eventually became known by their name. A post office opened in 1853 under the name Snelling's Ranch, later shortened to simply Snelling in 1870.
The town holds particular historical significance as the county seat of Merced County from 1857 to 1872. The courthouse built in 1857 stands as a rare surviving example of an early California courthouse and has been designated California Historical Landmark number 409. The two-story structure continued to serve as a justice court until the 1990s and remains standing today. Snelling is located where the Merced River emerges from the Sierra Nevada foothills at an elevation of 256 feet, at the northern terminus of State Route 59. According to the 2020 census, Snelling had a population of 238 residents living in approximately 110 housing units across the half-square-mile community. The area is served by the Snelling-Merced Falls Elementary School, which educates kindergarten through eighth grade students, while nearby Merced offers additional educational opportunities including El Capitan High School and UC Merced.
