Shiocton is a village in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, wholly surrounded by the Town of Bovina, with a population of 939 according to the 2020 census. The name has deep roots in the region's Native American heritage. In the Menominee language, the place is known as Māēnomehsāyak, meaning wild rice along the banks, referring to the wild rice that has long been a traditional staple for the Menominee and other Native American communities in the area. The Menominee ceded this territory to the United States through the 1836 Treaty of the Cedars, following years of negotiations regarding the relocation of the Oneida, Stockbridge-Munsee, and Brothertown peoples from New York to Wisconsin. In English, the village was originally called Jordan's Landing or Jordanville, likely named after Woodford D. Jordan, one of the area's first white settlers, before eventually becoming known as Shiocton. The Shioc River flows through the village and empties into the Wolf River, which plays a significant role in the community's character.
