Sharon is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, located about seventeen miles southwest of downtown Boston and connected to both Boston and Providence by the Providence/Stoughton Line. According to the 2020 census, Sharon has a population of 18,575 residents.
The town's history reaches back to 1637 when it was first settled as part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Sharon was established as a district in 1765 and incorporated as a town in 1775 before receiving its current name in 1783, inspired by Israel's Sharon plain due to the area's abundant forests. During the American Revolution, Sharon's residents contributed to the war effort by manufacturing cannonballs and cannons at a local foundry.
Sharon is perhaps best known as the home of Deborah Sampson, the town's official state heroine. Sampson disguised herself as a man to fight in the Revolutionary War and later settled in Sharon with her husband, Benjamin Gannett, a farmer. Her efforts to secure a military pension beginning in 1790 earned support from prominent figures including Paul Revere, who visited her farm in 1804. She was placed on the United States pension list in 1805. A statue of Sampson stands in front of the Sharon Public Library, and a street in town bears her name. In 1983, the Massachusetts General Court designated her as the Commonwealth's official State Heroine.
The town encompasses 24.2 square miles and features Lake Massapoag, a prominent recreational area for swimming and boating that played a key role in Sharon's development as a summer resort location.
