Seneca is an unincorporated community in Thomas County, Nebraska, situated in the Great Plains region. The town was established in January 1888 at a construction halt point on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad along the Middle Loup River. As a division point on the railroad, Seneca became home to a depot, rail yard, and roundhouse that employed over seventy people, bringing prosperity and growth to the settlement. The town flourished during the early twentieth century, reaching its peak population of 476 in 1920 and serving as the largest municipality in Thomas County for several years. Between 1918 and 1923, the Potash Highway was constructed through the center of Seneca, running parallel to the railroad route from Grand Island to Alliance. Later reconfigured as Nebraska Highway 2 in 1926, the highway was realigned south of town in the early 1940s to reduce railroad crossings. This shift, combined with the railroad's relocation of operations out of Seneca, led to significant job losses and business closures that steadily diminished the community's population. By 2010, the census recorded just thirty-three residents. The town's final chapter came in 2014, when a dispute over a village board ordinance regarding horses sparked a petition for disincorporation. In May 2014, residents voted seventeen to sixteen in favor of dissolving the village, which was officially dissolved by the Thomas County Board at the end of June 2014.
