Seiling is a city in Dewey County, Oklahoma, with a population of 850 according to the 2020 census. The town was named in 1899 for Louis Seiling, a local store owner who had acquired a homestead during the Cheyenne-Arapaho land run of April 1892. Originally established as Hobson by the Hobson Town and Improvement Company, the settlement changed its name to Seiling in January 1899 and incorporated in 1909. Today, Seiling is the largest city in Dewey County.
Despite significant geographical challenges, Seiling developed into a thriving agricultural center. The nearest railroad depot was located in Canton, more than twenty-five miles away, and bridges across either of the Canadian rivers did not exist until 1906. A horse racing track was constructed in 1903, reflecting the town's growing prosperity. The local economy has always been rooted in agriculture, beginning with broomcorn and cotton production. The Seiling Milling Company opened a flour mill in 1918, marketing White Rose Special flour until closing in 1952. Wheat and rye became important crops before World War I.
Seiling's location at the intersection of multiple highways—US-60, US-270, US-281, and several state highways—has earned it the designation as the "Crossroads of Northwest Oklahoma." The town offers various recreational facilities, including a city park on Seiling Creek, a nine-hole golf course built in 1980, and a public swimming pool.
