Scottsville is a village within the town of Wheatland in Monroe County, New York, located twelve miles southwest of Rochester's center. With a population of 2,009 as of the 2020 census, it sits within the Rochester metropolitan area and takes its name from Isaac Scott, an early settler who arrived in 1790 and purchased approximately 150 acres from the Wadsworth family.
Before Euro-American settlement, the area lay within the territory and hunting grounds of the Seneca people of the Haudenosaunee. Non-Indigenous settlement began in the late eighteenth century, with Ebenezer "Indian" Allan settling near Oatka Creek in 1786 and Jacob Schoonover arriving in 1790. Scott's log house stood at the southwest corner of Main and Rochester streets.
Scottsville's growth in the nineteenth century was deeply tied to agriculture and regional transportation. When the Genesee Valley Canal expanded through the village in the 1830s, Scottsville became an important shipping and commercial point for wheat, flour, and gypsum from the surrounding countryside. The Scottsville and Le Roy Railroad, chartered in 1836, further strengthened its role as a local trade center. The Western New York and Pennsylvania Railway later adapted portions of the abandoned Genesee Valley Canal corridor for rail use.
The village was formally incorporated in 1914. Today, the Rochester Street Historic District preserves the prosperity of this era, featuring numerous early to mid-nineteenth-century residences in the popular Greek Revival style. Eight sites within Scottsville are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, documenting its legacy as an agricultural, commercial, and transportation hub.
