Scio is a small city in Linn County, Oregon, located east of Jefferson and south of Stayton along Oregon Route 226, near where the north and south forks of the Santiam River meet. Incorporated in 1866, the city had a population of 956 at the 2020 census. The town's name came from William McKinney, one of its original residents who, along with Henry L. Turner, established a flour mill there. McKinney chose the name from his former home, Scio, Ohio, which itself was named after the Greek island of Chios. Thomas Creek, which flows through the city, was named for Frederick Thomas, who settled on its banks after obtaining a Donation Land Claim in 1846. The Scio post office was established on October 3, 1860, under postmaster Euphronius Wheeler. The community experienced significant challenges in recent decades, including a shooting at a nearby Salem tavern in 1981 and a damaging flood in January 2012. Scio covers 0.38 square miles and sits at an elevation of 317 feet. The region features a warm-summer Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and no average monthly temperatures above 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
