Saxis is a small town in Accomack County, Virginia, situated on an island that juts into Pocomoke Sound. Separated from the mainland by Freeschool Marsh, the community began as a single farmstead and grew throughout the 1800s before being incorporated in 1959. Today, Saxis has a population of 172 residents according to the 2020 census.
The area has a long human history. Prehistoric populations visited Saxis Island from as early as 8000 BCE through European contact in the seventeenth century, drawn by its rich marine and marsh environments. Captain John Smith documented the region during his 1608 exploratory voyage, encountering the Pocomoke Indians along the sound. European settlers began claiming land in 1661, and by 1666 the island had been divided into two sections: Robert Sikes's northern 150-acre property and George Parker's southern 200-acre parcel. By 1860, the population had grown to 169 residents, including 15 free blacks.
During the Civil War, Pocomoke Sound became a smuggling route for Confederate supplies. After Union occupation in November 1861, local tradition holds that at least two Saxis vessels engaged in blockade running to supply Confederate troops. Following the war, fishing and oyster dredging became major commercial enterprises. The 1866 extension of the Pennsylvania Railroad to nearby Crisfield, Maryland, spurred growth in commercial oystering, which boomed in the early twentieth century with the 1903 construction of a offshore wharf. Steamers carried Saxis seafood products to Northern cities and brought visitors to the island.
Today, the town maintains its maritime heritage. The Saxis fishing pier, completed in 2002, provides public fishing access, while the Saxis Island Museum preserves local history. The adjacent Saxis Wildlife Management Area protects over six thousand acres of tidal marshland.
