San Juan is a city located in Hidalgo County in the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 35,294 residents, representing growth from the 33,856 people counted in 2010. San Juan is part of both the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission and Reynosa–McAllen metropolitan areas. The city is situated five miles east of McAllen and eight miles south of Edinburg, the county seat, placing it just ten miles north of the Mexican border at the Pharr–Reynosa International Bridge.
San Juan was officially organized in 1909, with the community's establishment aided significantly by the efforts of John Closner. Today, the city is perhaps best known for the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle, one of the largest churches in South Texas and a notable landmark in the region. The city covers a total area of 11.5 square miles and is bordered by Pharr to the west and Alamo to the east. Nearly all of San Juan's residents live in urban areas, with the 2020 census showing that about 29.7 percent of the population was under eighteen years old and 11.7 percent was sixty-five or older. The community is primarily served by the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District and has access to the San Juan Memorial Library.
