Saint Paul is the county seat of Howard County, Nebraska, and home to 2,416 residents according to the 2020 census. The city was founded in 1871 by two surveyors, James N. and Nicholas J. Paul, who were captivated by the beauty and potential of the Loup valley. After successfully petitioning the state legislature to establish Howard County, they laid out the townsite and brought the first settlers in March of that year. The town was originally drawn as Athens from a hat of suggested names, but Nebraska Senator Phineas W. Hitchcock proposed Saint Paul instead, honoring the brothers who founded it. The city officially became the county seat by vote in 1874 and was incorporated in 1881.
During its early decades, Saint Paul served as an important trade center for the frontier region, complete with covered wagons, cattle herds, and railroad construction crews. The community fostered numerous industries, including flour mills, brick factories, and a broom factory. One of the flour mills developed the first self-rising flour, and a chicken hatchery that began in nearby Cushing relocated to Saint Paul in 1922. The city is perhaps most famous as the birthplace and retirement home of Grover Cleveland Alexander, the legendary baseball player inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Saint Paul honors this legacy each year with Grover Cleveland Alexander Days, celebrated the weekend following Independence Day. The American Legion baseball field, dedicated in 1971, bears Alexander's name.
