Round Top is a small community nestled in northeastern Fayette County, Texas, with a population of 87 at the 2020 census. The town sits on a hill between Cummins Creek and Rocky Creek, tributaries of the Colorado River, at an elevation of 439 feet above sea level. Texas State Highway 237 runs through the center of town, connecting Round Top to Brenham to the northeast and La Grange to the southwest.
The area's history traces back to the Stephen F. Austin colony, when James Winn acquired 4,428 acres in 1831 that included the present townsite. The community was originally called "Townsend" after early settler Nathaniel Townsend, whose original house still stands as the Texana Lodge. The town later took the name "Round Top" because the postmaster lived in a house with a round tower. German settlement began between 1845 and 1847 after the Adelsverein purchased portions of Nassau Plantation, with these immigrants gradually buying local farms and town lots.
Round Top holds several historical distinctions. The Bethlehem Lutheran Church is the oldest active Lutheran church in Fayette County and the oldest Lutheran church sanctuary in Texas. Moore's Fort, the oldest building in Fayette County, was relocated to Round Top from nearby La Grange.
