Roca is a small village located in Lancaster County, Nebraska, nestled within the Lincoln Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the village had a population of 201 residents spread across just 0.14 square miles of land.
The origins of Roca trace back to the pioneering efforts of settlers like John and Margaret Prey, who arrived from Wisconsin in 1857 to preempt land in the area. The real economic foundation of the community emerged in 1861 when Delos Mills settled near Salt Creek and began quarrying limestone from ledges that naturally protruded from the ground. This stone quarrying became the area's chief industry, and when the Atchinson and Nebraska Railroad established a line through the region in 1871, a siding and station required a name. Haskel Warner, drawing on his experience in the New Mexico Territory, suggested "Roca," the Spanish word for stone, a fitting choice for a community built on its quarrying heritage.
The town was officially platted in 1876 and incorporated that same year. The quarries flourished, with operations like Keys and Bullock's Blue Stone quarry, established in 1875, supplying rock for construction projects across Lincoln and beyond. Active quarrying continued in the area for over a century, making stone extraction central to Roca's identity and economic development throughout much of its history.
