Rising Sun is a town in Cecil County, Maryland, with a population of 2,740 according to the 2020 census. Its history is deeply rooted in colonial America and the disputed boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland. Originally part of the "Nottingham Lots" settled by Quakers in 1702, the area was confirmed to be in Maryland following the Mason-Dixon survey in the 1760s. The town's name derives from a stone tavern established around 1720 by Henry Reynolds on Nottingham Lot No. 17. The tavern, marked by a sign depicting the rising sun, served as a stagecoach stop along the busy route between Baltimore and Philadelphia, becoming a gathering place for business and political activities. Local tradition holds that the tavern's fame led to the surrounding village of Summer Hill being renamed Rising Sun when the post office was established around 1815. The town was formally incorporated in 1860, when commissioners installed slate sidewalks, street lamps, and hired a lamplighter. Six years later, the Philadelphia and Baltimore Central Railroad began service to Rising Sun, spurring modern development. The town is home to several properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including historic meetinghouses and residences. Rising Sun holds the distinction of allowing women to vote in municipal elections in 1916, four years before the Nineteenth Amendment granted voting rights nationwide. Today, the town remains accessible via U.S. Route 1 and serves as a small but historically significant community in northeastern Maryland.
