Richmond Hill is a commercial and residential neighborhood in southwestern Queens that has evolved from farmland into a vibrant community. The area is bounded by Kew Gardens and Forest Park to the north, Jamaica and South Jamaica to the east, South Ozone Park to the south, and Woodhaven and Ozone Park to the west. The neighborhood's name derives either from a London suburb or from Edward Richmond, a landscape architect who designed much of the area in the mid-nineteenth century.
The history of Richmond Hill stretches back centuries. Before European colonization, the Rockaway Native American group occupied the land. In 1660, the Welling family purchased land in the colonial town of Rustdorp, establishing what became the Welling Farm. The Revolutionary War touched the area, with the Battle of Long Island fought nearby in 1776, and Lefferts Farm reportedly serving as a battle site. In 1868, Manhattan lawyer Albon Platt Man purchased four hundred acres and commissioned Richmond to develop the neighborhood into a planned residential community. Over the following decade, streets, schools, a church, and railroad stations were constructed, making Richmond Hill one of Long Island's earliest residential communities. The neighborhood was incorporated as an independent village in 1894 and consolidated into Greater New York in 1898.
Today, Richmond Hill remains known for its well-preserved architecture, including Queen Anne Victorian homes dating to the turn of the twentieth century.
