Reedville is an unincorporated community in Northumberland County, located in the Northern Neck region of Virginia at the eastern end of U.S. Route 360, where it sits at the head of Cockrell's Creek on the Chesapeake Bay's western shore. Reed relocated his business to the Northern Neck and established the first processing plant, introducing methods to extract oil from millions of fish for use as lubricant and lighting fuel, while rendering the leftover bones and carcasses into valuable fertilizer. By 1885, the town was heavily engaged in menhaden processing, and Reedville, with a population of approximately 500, became known as the wealthiest town in the United States.
