Red Cloud is the county seat of Webster County, Nebraska, with a population of 962 at the 2020 census. The region was used as hunting grounds by the Pawnees until 1833, when a treaty led them to surrender their lands south of the Platte River. Webster County opened to homesteaders in 1870, and Silas Garber and other settlers filed claims along Crooked Creek that year. The town was voted county seat of the newly formed county in 1871 and was platted in 1872, taking its name from the renowned Oglala Lakota leader Red Cloud.
The city is perhaps best known for its connection to author Willa Cather, who lived there with her family for seven years beginning in 1883 at age nine and visited often throughout her life. Cather used Red Cloud as inspiration for several of her novels, including My Ántonia, in which the town appears as Black Hawk. Her early articles were published in The Red Cloud Chief, the city's first newspaper. Several nineteenth-century buildings described in her books are preserved as part of the Willa Cather Historic District, the largest historic district dedicated to an author on the National Register of Historic Places, and her childhood home is also included in the district.
