Reading, Kansas, is a small city located in Lyon County at the eastern edge of the county, situated fifteen miles northeast of Emporia along Highway 170. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 181 residents. The community traces its origins to 1870, when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway reached the area. James Fagan, an agent for railroad lands, along with representatives T. J. Peter and M. S. Sargent, organized a town company and platted sixty acres, naming the settlement Reading after Reading, Pennsylvania, where the land's original owners were based. The first post office was established in August 1870, and the city was formally incorporated in September 1890.
Reading's modern history includes a significant natural disaster. On May 21, 2011, an EF3 tornado struck the community around 9:15 p.m., devastating the small town. The tornado was three blocks wide and traveled approximately four miles, destroying at least 56 of 110 homes and 14 of 21 businesses. The post office and fire station sustained major damage, and one person was killed with two hospitalized. Damage estimates exceeded $2.2 million. The resilient community began rebuilding with assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and by 2023, most of the town had been reconstructed.
