Rathdrum is a city in Kootenai County, Idaho, nestled at the base of Rathdrum Mountain, part of the Selkirk Mountain Range. The city has grown steadily in recent decades, with its population rising from 6,826 in 2010 to 9,211 in 2020. Today, Rathdrum spans 6.54 square miles and serves as part of the Coeur d'Alene Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The town's name carries Irish heritage. Originally called Westwood in honor of one of its founders, Charles Wesley Wood, a Pony Express rider and rancher, the settlement was forced to change its name in 1881 when the federal government determined another Idaho town already held that name. Local businessman Michael M. Cowley, born in County Wicklow, Ireland, suggested the name Rathdrum after his birthplace, and the name has remained ever since.
Rathdrum's modern growth accelerated near the end of the nineteenth century when the Northern Pacific Railway extended its line westward toward Spokane. Today, the city remains on Idaho's only regular railway line, now operated by BNSF Railway. The Empire Builder, Amtrak's transcontinental train service, passes through Rathdrum without stopping. This railway connection, a legacy of the town's early development, continues to link Rathdrum to the broader region and represents an important part of the community's history and infrastructure.
