Ralph is an unincorporated community in West Branch Township, Dickinson County, Michigan. Located where the west branch of the Escanaba River flows through the region, Ralph was established in 1901 as a station along the Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad. The community takes its name from Ralph Wells, son of lumberman J. W. Wells from Menominee. When a post office first opened here on January 17, 1901, it was originally named Bryden, but this was changed to Ralph on June 6, 1904. The post office served the community until its closure in 2012. Today, Ralph remains part of West Branch Township, which encompasses a vast area of 111.85 square miles across Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The township is known for its sparse population and remote character, with residents served by North Dickinson County Schools located to the southwest in the community of Felch. The natural landscape includes the north and main branches of the Ford River alongside the west branch of the Escanaba River, defining the geography of this rural corner of Dickinson County.
