Quamba is a small city in Kanabec County, Minnesota, with a population of 107 according to the 2020 census. It holds the distinction of being the only city in Minnesota whose name begins with the letter Q. The community was first established in 1882 along a side track of the Great Northern Railway. Originally called Mud Creek after the waterway that flows through the area, the settlement's name reflected its geography, though the local Ojibwe population knew the creek by the name Basa'igani-ziibiwishenh, meaning "Creek to Square Cedar Timbers." When the railway depot was constructed, the name changed to Quamba, derived from an Indian word for mudhole, likely from the Ottawa word meaning "be a muddy hole in the ground." The community was platted in 1901 by Oric Ogilvie Whited and formally incorporated as a village on July 11, 1952. The city's post office operated during two periods: from 1901 to 1903 and again from 1906 to 1966. Covering a total area of 0.704 square miles, Quamba is served by Minnesota State Highway 23 and several county roads, connecting it to the broader region.
