Potsdam is a town in Saint Lawrence County, New York with a resident population of 8,162 according to the 2024 census. However, the town's character changes dramatically during the academic year when approximately 8,000 students arrive, as the town is home to both the State University of New York at Potsdam and Clarkson University. The town was named after the city of Potsdam in Germany.
Settlement in the area began around 1803, when early investors David Clarkson and Garret van Horn arrived to find Native Americans already living there and engaged in the fur trade. The town was officially established in 1806 from part of the Town of Madrid and stands as one of the original ten towns of Saint Lawrence County. The community incorporated as a village in 1831, marking its separation from the broader town. Education has deep roots here, with St. Lawrence Academy, the predecessor of SUNY Potsdam, founded in 1816, followed by the establishment of Clarkson University in 1896.
The region is particularly renowned for its distinctive reddish-orange Potsdam sandstone, with a notable slab displayed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
