Portage, the county seat of Columbia County, Wisconsin, is home to 10,581 residents according to the 2020 census, making it the largest city in the county and part of the Madison metropolitan area. The city takes its name from the Fox-Wisconsin Waterway, a natural portage between the Fox River and the Wisconsin River that was discovered by Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet in 1673 during their expedition to find a route to the Mississippi River. The Menominee people called this place Kahkāmohnakaneh, meaning "at the short cut," recognizing the strategic advantage of the roughly mile-and-a-half strip of marshy floodplain between the two rivers. By the end of the seventeenth century, this waterway had become the major fur trade thoroughfare between Green Bay and Prairie du Chice. The federal government recognized the area's economic importance by building Fort Winnebago in 1828, and after years of controversy, Winnebago settlement won the county seat in 1851. The community incorporated as Portage City in 1854. The city's downtown business district developed along a hill overlooking the Portage Canal and flourished from the Civil War era through the early twentieth century as a bustling commercial center serving north central Wisconsin. Today, Portage remains a vibrant community where geography and history intertwine, with its slogan declaring "Where the North Begins."
