Poquoson, informally known as Bull Island, is an independent city located on the Virginia Peninsula within the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. With a population of 12,460 as of the 2020 census, this small city has deep roots in Virginia history. The name itself derives from a Native American word meaning "great marsh," referring to the low, marshy, woody places that characterized the landscape. These lands were originally inhabited by Algonquian people affiliated with the Powhatan Confederacy before English colonization began in the 17th century. Settlement of the area began in 1628, with the first recorded land grant occurring in 1631 when Christopher Calthorpe received 500 acres in New Poquoson Parish. Poquoson grew as a close-knit rural community for approximately 300 years before undergoing significant changes in the mid-twentieth century. The community incorporated as a town in 1952, driven by residents' desire to maintain their own high school rather than having children bused to York High School. In 1975, Poquoson became an independent city, a change that also protected it from potential annexation by the adjacent City of Hampton. The city's informal name, Bull Island, comes from centuries-old practice of farmers allowing cattle to roam freely in the salt marshes. Though the herds are long gone and only a few small farms remain, Poquoson residents proudly call themselves Bull Islanders, maintaining a connection to their agricultural heritage.
