Pomeroy, the county seat of Meigs County, Ohio, sits along the Ohio River about 21 miles south of Athens. Founded in 1804 and named for landowner Samuel Pomeroy, the village was incorporated in 1840 and designated county seat in 1841. The area's earliest settlement began with Samuel Ervin's arrival at Kerr's Run in 1806, followed by the beginning of coal mining in 1819. Early development included taverns, mills, and river commerce, with a town laid out and named Nyesville in 1827. When Samuel Wyllys Pomeroy arrived from Massachusetts in 1830 to view his coal lands, he recognized the area's potential. His son-in-law Valentine B. Horton developed the coal mines, recruited immigrant miners from Germany, Ireland, and Wales, and pioneered coal transportation by river, building the first coal-powered boat in 1836. The discovery of salt in deep wells near the river in 1848 led to another major industry, with the Excelsior Salt Company among those operating until environmental regulations forced closures in the 1970s. By 1870, Pomeroy's population had grown to 5,000, and the town boasted steel mills, machine shops, breweries, factories, and numerous businesses. The early twentieth century brought peak prosperity, though the strikes of the 1920s and the Great Depression began an economic decline. World War II brought temporary revival, but coal and salt production never resumed afterward, and the population has gradually decreased. Today, Pomeroy has a population of 1,573 according to the 2020 census.
