Piermont is a village in Rockland County, New York, incorporated in 1847, located on the west bank of the Hudson River in the town of Orangetown. With a 2020 population of 2,517, the village has deep roots in the region's transportation history. Originally known as Tappan Landing, the settlement was renamed by Dr. Eleazar Lord, author, educator, and first president of the Erie Railroad, who combined the name of nearby Tallman Mountain with "pier" to reflect the railroad's long terminal built into the Hudson River in 1839. This pier served as a crucial connection point, allowing the Erie Railroad's first line from Suffern to reach the Hudson and access to New York City by water. During World War II, troops from Camp Shanks marched to this same pier to board ferries for transport overseas during the European Theater campaign, a history commemorated by a memorial plaque. The village's architectural character reflects its nineteenth-century origins, including the Piermont Railroad Station, a Victorian Stick style building constructed in 1873 that was restored to its original appearance and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. The village is also home to the only hand-cranked drawbridge in Rockland County, originally built in 1880, which now serves as a pedestrian link to Tallman Mountain State Park. Late in the twentieth century, Piermont became a modest tourist destination, particularly attracting day-trippers from New York City who bike along Bike Route 9.
