Pierce is a small city in Clearwater County in the northwest corner of Idaho with a population of 467 as of the 2020 census, down from 508 a decade earlier. The city occupies a significant place in Idaho history. In October 1860, Elias D. Pierce and Wilbur F. Bassett made the first discovery of gold in Idaho on Orofino Creek, just a mile north of present-day Pierce. This discovery, occurring on land that had been ceded to the Nez Perce people, triggered major changes to that agreement in 1863 and ultimately contributed to the Nez Perce War of 1877. Pierce served as the first county seat for Shoshone County when it was established in January 1861, and the Pierce Courthouse, built in 1862, remains Idaho's oldest public building. The county seat later moved north to Murray in 1884 and then to Wallace in 1898. Pierce is located about nine miles northeast of the Weippe Prairie, north of the Clearwater River canyon. The city experiences a humid continental climate and covers 0.82 square miles. The area that is now Clearwater County was originally part of Shoshone County before being annexed by Nez Perce County in 1904, and Clearwater County itself was formally established in 1911.
