Peru is a small town nestled in northeastern Bennington County, Vermont, with a population of 531 according to the 2020 census. Originally chartered as Bromley in 1761 by Benning Wentworth, the governor of the Province of New Hampshire, the town underwent a significant transformation in its early years. The first white settlement arrived in 1773 when William Barlow of Connecticut established himself in the area. By March 1802, the town had been officially organized at a town meeting, with fourteen families calling it home. Late 1803 or early 1804 marked a turning point when town leaders renamed their community from Bromley to Peru, a strategic decision designed to attract settlers by capitalizing on the wealth and prestige associated with the South American nation and its renowned silver mining industry.
Geographically, Peru spans approximately 37 square miles and features prominent natural landmarks including Bromley Mountain, which rises to 3,300 feet and hosts both a ski area and summer adventure park. The Green Mountains run through the western half of town, with the Long Trail and Appalachian Trail traversing this scenic landscape. Peru Peak and Styles Peak add to the town's mountainous character. The town center sits in the southeastern portion at an elevation of 1,706 feet, accessible via Vermont Route 11.
