Pendleton is a town in Anderson County, South Carolina with a population of 3,489 at the 2020 census. Located in northwestern Anderson County southeast of Clemson, the town sits along U.S. Route 76, which connects it to Anderson, the county seat, fourteen miles to the southeast and to Greenville thirty miles to the northeast. Pendleton shares a sister city relationship with Stornoway in Scotland's Outer Hebrides.
The town's history spans centuries, beginning with Cherokee nation territory before England claimed South Carolina as a colony. After the British victory in the war of 1759 to 1760, British settlers began establishing large farms in the region. General Andrew Pickens, a Revolutionary War officer, commissioned the District of Pendleton in 1790. During the first half of the 1800s, wealthy low-country plantation owners built summer homes here, including Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, who constructed Woodburn Plantation in 1830. The Adger family later expanded Woodburn to over 1,000 acres with an enlarged eighteen-room house.
Today, Pendleton preserves its heritage through the Pendleton Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Notable buildings on the town square include Farmer's Hall and Hunter's Store, now home to the Pendleton District Historical, Recreational and Tourism Commission. Several historic properties remain on the National Register, including Ashtabula, the Boone-Douthit House, the Faith Cabin Library at Anderson County Training School, and Woodburn.
