Pemberton is a small borough located in Burlington County, New Jersey, situated within the Philadelphia–Reading–Camden combined statistical area and the Delaware Valley region. The borough was incorporated on December 15, 1826, from portions of New Hanover Township and Northampton Township, now known as Mount Holly Township, and became an independent borough around 1894. The borough encompasses 0.61 square miles and is home to 1,371 residents according to the 2020 census, representing a slight population decrease from the prior decade. Pemberton is a dry community where alcohol sales are prohibited by law, a restriction affirmed by referendum in 1980. The borough operates under the borough form of government, which is the most common municipal structure in New Jersey, with a mayor and six-member council elected at-large on a partisan basis.
