Otis is an unincorporated community in Lincoln County, Oregon, situated a half mile north of Otis Junction on Oregon Route 18, near the Salmon River. The Otis post office was established in 1900 and named after Otis Thompson, nephew of postmaster Archibald S. Thompson. The community's character changed significantly in the 1960s when a curvy and hilly section of U.S. Route 101 was rerouted away from the area, with Otis Junction now marking the intersection of the former terminus of Oregon Route 18 and the old U.S. 101 alignment.
Today, Otis and Otis Junction are considered synonymous, and the Otis ZIP code 97368 also serves the nearby community of Rose Lodge. The Sitka Center for Art and Ecology carries an Otis mailing address, though it is located closer to the coast on Cascade Head. In 1910, Vivian Lematta's grandfather purchased the land from descendants of the Siletz Indians for eight hundred dollars. When Lematta left in 1957, the property eventually gained national attention in 1999 and again in 2004 when approximately 193 acres were offered for sale at three million dollars. The sale included the Otis Café, gas station, mini grocery store, Pronto Pup corn dog stand, post office, Grange hall, auto-repair garage, horse barn, helicopter storage shed, and farmland used for cattle raising and timber conservation.
