Orange is a town in New Haven County, Connecticut, with a population of 14,280 according to the 2020 census. Governed by a Board of Selectmen, Orange has deep historical roots in the region. The Paugussett and Algonquian people originally inhabited the area before English colonists arrived. In 1639, Reverend Peter Prudden purchased the land from Native Americans in exchange for six coats, ten blankets, one kettle, twelve hatchets, twelve hoes, two dozen knives, and a dozen small mirrors. Orange was initially part of Milford but separated to form its own town in 1822 as the population grew. The town takes its name from William III of England, Prince of Orange, remembered for succeeding the deposed James II during the Glorious Revolution of 1688. In 1921, West Haven was officially separated from Orange by act of the Connecticut General Assembly, leaving Orange largely rural until post-war suburbanization began. Early transportation routes through Orange included the Boston Post Road and the Derby Turnpike, an old Indian path. A toll road from New Haven to Derby, constructed starting in 1800, operated until tolls ended in 1887. Rail service arrived with the New Haven and Derby Railroad in 1871, followed by trolley service from 1904 to 1937. Today, Orange encompasses 17.4 square miles across New Haven County, bordered by Milford, West Haven, New Haven, Woodbridge, Derby, and Shelton. The town hosts significant employers, including the North American headquarters of Pez candies, Avangrid and its subsidiaries, and the University of New Haven's graduate school campus.
