North Bend is a city in Coos County, Oregon, with a population of 10,317 as of the 2020 census. Surrounded on three sides by Coos Bay, an S-shaped estuary where the Coos River enters the water, North Bend became an incorporated city in 1903. Before European arrival, members of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, Siuslaw, and Coquille tribes had lived in the region for thousands of years, fishing, hunting, and gathering along the bay and its rivers. Thomas Symons founded Yarrow in 1863, and Louis J. Simpson later purchased it and merged it with a sawmill site in 1902, creating North Bend the following year. Early industries included timber harvesting, shipbuilding, farming, coal mining, and salmon canning. The region remained largely isolated until 1916, when trains linked it to interior settlements. Significant growth followed in the 1920s and 1930s through 1950s, driven by shipyard contracts for World War II minesweepers and rescue tugs, and by large national lumber companies expanding operations. The completion of the North Bend Bridge in 1936 and the Roosevelt Highway provided crucial modern transportation connections. During the Great Depression, when the city's only bank temporarily closed, North Bend creatively minted myrtlewood currency in denominations from 25 cents to $10 to meet payroll needs. Many residents kept these tokens as collector's items rather than redeeming them, and they eventually became legal tender in perpetuity, with fewer than ten full sets believed to exist today.
