New Glarus, a village in Green County, Wisconsin, was founded in 1845 by Swiss immigrants seeking escape from poverty and hardship in their homeland. In the early 1840s, the canton of Glarus in eastern Switzerland faced desperate economic conditions with failed crops, food scarcity, and more workers than available jobs. The canton's government established the Glarus Emigration Society in 1844 to encourage emigration to America, offering loans and the promise of twenty acres of free land to settlers willing to start over in the New World.
Two men, Nicolas Duerst and Fridolin Streiff, were sent ahead in 1845 with twenty-six hundred dollars to locate and prepare a settlement. After searching Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, they selected twelve hundred acres along the Little Sugar River in southern Wisconsin, purchasing the fertile basin for one dollar and twenty-five cents per acre on July 17, 1845. The landscape, with its valley, hilltops, and nearby timber, reminded them of their native Switzerland.
One hundred and eight settlers finally arrived on August 15, 1845, after an arduous four-month journey from Switzerland through Baltimore and St. Louis. Three members perished during the trek. The pioneers, many of them carpenters, mechanics, and farmers, survived their first winter in a single wooden hut, subsisting on potatoes, cheese, and fish from the river while working in nearby lead mines. By 1870, over twelve hundred Swiss natives lived in Green County. The colony prospered, with the first store opening in 1851, the first hotel in 1853, and the first cheese factory in 1870.
